In recent years, faster and more powerful computers have become
available to individual investors which increased the need for
access to the futures markets via electronic futures trading
platforms. Then the need for smaller futures contracts geared
towards smaller investors necessitated the creation of the e mini
futures trading contract.
The "e" stands for electronic and the mini for the smaller contract
size. E mini contracts for the various stock indexes are the most
popular with the S & P e mini being the index day trader's contract
of choice because of its greater liquidity. The S & P e mini is 1/5
the size of the big S & P contract and each point represents $50 X
the index. Other e mini futures contracts are available for the Dow
Jones, the Nasdaq and other stock indices. There are also e mini
contracts for metals, grains and energy futures.
Many futures contracts that are still traded in pits also offer e
